Enhancing Transaction Search

Situation

I was responsible for the end-to-end design process of an audit around account and transaction features at Sopra Banking Software to identify opportunities for improvement. During this audit, I discovered that users were struggling to locate specific transactions and view their details, leading to frustration and inefficiency.

Task

My task was to propose and design solutions that would simplify the process of finding and viewing transaction details. The goal was to improve user experience by making the process more intuitive and efficient.

Action

I analyzed how other apps addressed similar issues and used those insights to propose two design solutions:

  • Full-page filter: Displayed all filter options on one page, providing a comprehensive view but overwhelming users with too much information.

  • Pill filters: Allowed users to filter results through clickable pills, offering a more streamlined, manageable approach.

I created high-fidelity prototypes for both options and conducted usability testing. During testing, it became clear that the full-page filter caused cognitive overload, while the pill filter offered a more intuitive and user-friendly experience.

Results

The pill filter solution resulted in:

  • Faster task completion times.

  • Increased user satisfaction, as users found it easier to navigate and locate specific transactions.

  • A more intuitive and enjoyable user experience overall. The pill filter proved to be the more effective design solution, as confirmed by usability tests and positive user feedback.

Learnings

Through this project, I learned the importance of simplifying user interactions. The contrast between the full-page filter and the pill filter reinforced how users value clarity over complexity. I also realised the significance of user testing in validating design decisions, as it highlighted the cognitive load caused by overwhelming options. This experience strengthened my ability to make design choices that prioritize user ease, and reinforced the need for continuous iteration to refine the user experience.

I developed documentation for the design system, detailing how components should be used. I also encouraged team members to contribute by sharing their use cases or suggesting improvements.
